SOUTH POINT — In a game of speed versus power, the Fairland Dragons used their speed to score 19 points in the fourth quarter and overcome a 311-yard rushing effort by South Point’s Doug Dillon to stay perfect in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 42-24 win Friday.

“Our kids played well but we came out slow on defense and did not do some of the things we wanted to do on defense,” Fairland coach Dave Carroll said.

“We were able to make some adjustments and come through with a win. Our kids have grown up a lot this year, and we have several guys who step up and make plays for us.”

Fairland (6-2, 3-0) took an early lead going 72 yards in four plays in less than two minutes when Matt Bloomfield found the end zone from 38 yards out. Tanner Sowards added the two-point conversion and the score was 8-0 with 10:18 to go in the first.

South Point would answer right back when Dillon pounded his way in from 7 yards out. The conversion failed and the score was 8-6 with 8:11 to go.

“We moved the ball effectively tonight, and our line blocked extremely well. We just had some issues taking care of the ball with two fumbles, and Fairland was able to capitalize on our mistakes with 14 points off our turnovers,” said South Point coach Doug Shilot.

After forcing a Fairland turnover on downs, South Point looked to take the lead. However, on the first play of the series, Dillon was stripped and Fairland recovered at the South Point 30-yard line.

On the next play, Dragons’ quarterback Chad Fisher weaved through the defense for a 30-yard score. Tyler Duty added the two-point conversion and it was 16-6.

South Point (1-7, 1-2) would start their next drive at their own 24 and the drive would spill over into the second quarter.

Three plays into the second, Doug Dillon would again find the end zone, this time from one-yard out. The two-point try was no good and the score was 16-12 with 11:05 to go in the half.

The drive covered 76-yards in 14 plays, and took 6:55 off the clock at the end of the first and beginning of the second.

After a short kickoff, the Dragons took over at their own 48. On the first play, Bloomfield caught a lateral screen pass from Fisher and race down the sidelines for a gain of 23 yards. On the next play, Duty would find the end zone from 29 yards out. Duty kicked the conversion and the score at halftime was 23-12.

After a scoreless third quarter, Fairland would extend the lead on a Bloomfield 2-yard run. The extra point was no good and the score was 29-12 with 10:20 to go in the fourth.

South Point would answer right back on the first play of the next series when Doug Dillon outran the Dragons defense down the sideline for a 69-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good and the score was 29-18 with 10:02 to go in the game.

The back and forth scoring continued as Fairland went 50-yards in six plays with Bloomfield scoring his second touchdown of the quarter, this one coming from 13-yards out.

Duty added the extra point and the score was 36-18 with 7:05 to go in the fourth. Bloomfield would finish with 149-yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns.

After a South Point fumble, Fairland would add to the lead when Tyler Duty scored from one-yard out. The extra-point was no good, and the score was 42-18 with 5:40 to go in the game. Duty finished the game with 53-yards on 11 carries for Fairland.

“(South Point) is a lot better than what their record indicates, and I was happy for our seniors because they had never beaten South Point since Middle School.”

South Point would set the final score when Dillon capped off a 55-yard, nine-play drive with a one-yard score. The two-point conversion was no good, and the score was 42-24. Dillon had his 311 yards on 31 carries and scored four touchdowns.

“I just the credit to the offensive line. They were able to open holes up for me,” South Point running back Doug Dillon said. “The entire team played hard, but we came up just a little short tonight.”

Fisher added 132 yards on 13 carries for Fairland. He was also 4-of-5 passing for 70 yards.

Brandon Hedrick added 66 yards on 12 carries for South Point.
