Some lessons can be learned from books. Others can come from professors or teachers who have spent many years educating themselves. Many others can only be gained through experience.

But, as many friends and family have learned, some can be learned from a 12-year-old boy who is determined to overcome the challenges in his life.

Kyle Bolen, of Hanging Rock, may have only been in this world for a dozen years but he has shown the tenacity, drive and human spirit that should make those of all ages proud and envious.

You see, Kyle suffers from multiple mental and physical health issues including developmental delays, learning disabilities, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

When he was born, doctors said it would be a longshot if he ever walked. That didn’t stop him.

They said he would likely never talk. He does so very well.

So when Kyle asked to enter the 72nd annual All-American Soap Box Derby Championship, Super Kids division, he wasn’t thinking about just showing up. He was in it to win it.

And so he did.

Kyle qualified in Charleston to go to the championship tournament in Akron. There he beat out 55 other competitors with a 10-1 record to claim the trophy.

Kyle’s drive and willingness to reach for a dream is something that should resonate with each and every one of us.

His ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success against long odds is something that should inspire everyone.

Some lessons can come from a 12-year-old boy who believes dreams can come true.
