IRONTON — Four city council hopefuls and a pair of school board candidates have committed to appear Monday night at the Ironton Co-Operative Club’s annual “Meet the Candidates” night.

Scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Bowman Auditorium at Ohio University Southern, the forum will again be moderated by former news anchor and current Greater Lawrence County Area Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Smith.

Ironton City Council hopefuls Bob Cleary, Leo Johnson, Mike Lutz and Hugh Scott have all officially committed to the event, said Co-Operative Club member and forum organizer Lou Pyles.

Pyles said Saturday that city council candidate Dave Frazer decided not to participate in the forum due to medical reasons. She added that an invitation to council candidate Beth Rist was not responded to.

On the school board side of the forum, candidates Jay Zornes and A. Burton Payne have accepted the club’s invitation and are scheduled to appear.

Board of Education hopeful Daniel Hartwig declined to appear, Pyles said. School board candidate Jerry Brownstead did not respond to the club’s invitation.

As in previous years, the forum will allow candidates a two-minute introduction followed by one-minute responses to questions drafted by audience members and selected by Smith.

All candidates for both Ironton City Council and Ironton Board of Education were invited to attend and had until Monday, Oct. 12 to accept or decline the invitation.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
