An Ironton man accused of inappropriate behavior with two young girls was one of numerous people making appearances last week in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

James H. Robinson, 41, of 121 S. Eighth St., Ironton, was arraigned on six counts of sexual battery.

Five of the charges involve one girl who was 14 years old at the time of the alleged incidents; the other count involves another girl who was 13 at the time of the alleged assault.

The first five alleged incidents occurred between Nov. 27, 2008 and Feb. 19 of this year.

The sixth incident occurred in March of this year.

Assistant Lawrence County Prosecutor Mack Anderson said Robinson was also indicted on six counts of rape involving the same incidents and the same two victims.

“It allows the jury to consider either the offense of rape or sexual battery,” Anderson said.

Robinson pleaded not guilty through his attorney, Mike Gleichauf. Judge Charles Cooper allowed a bond posted earlier to continue and ordered Robinson to return to court Oct. 28 for a pretrial conference.

In another matter, Cooper is considering a request to lower the bond of a man accused of holding up the Pine Tree Carryout in August.

Attorney Sterling Gill argued that Daniel E. Stapleton, 30, of 582 Township Road 343, Ironton, was unable to meet the $100,000 cash $200,000 property bond set at his arraignment. But family could post a $180,000 property bond.

“We ask the court to consider setting a bond in a range they can meet,” Gill said.

But Lawrence County Prosecutor J.B. Collier Jr., said he thought bond was reasonable “in view of the serious charges that involved a gun.”

Cooper said he would issue a decision at a later date.

Also Wednesday, Jeffrey S. Spencer, 31, of 248 Township Road 1163, Proctorville, was arraigned on charges of failure to comply with the order and signal of a police officer, driving while intoxicated and driving without insurance.

He pleaded not guilty through Gleichauf, who was standing in for Spencer’s attorney, Philip Heald.

Judge D. Scott Bowling set bond an own recognizance bond of $100,000 plus a $50,000 cash or property bond and scheduled a pretrial conference for this week.
