Defense dominates

SOUTH POINT — The St. Joseph Flyers might as well have put up a “No Trespassing” sign.

The Flyers allowed just three shots on goal as they blanked the South Point Pointers 4-0 Monday in a Division III sectional soccer game.

“Needless to say, we did a great job defensively,” said Flyers’ coach Sissy Clyse. “They only had three shots on goal, so the defense did a great job keeping them on the other side of the field.”

Joseph “The Shoe” Unger had three keeper saves and the Flyers put up 24 shots on goal en route to the victory.

St. Joseph led 1-0 at the half on a penalty kick by Eli Lewis.

The Flyers blew the game open with three goals in the second half including two by Tanner Riley.

With an assist from Payton Blair, Riley scored the first goal of the second half and it was 2-0.

Blair got his own score on a penalty kick and Riley capped the scoring with a goal off an assist from Levi Hopkins.

Clyse said the Flyers had a great team effort.

“Nick Roach was sick so we used a couple of different players at midfielder. Anthony Whaley had an excellent game on defense,” said Clyse.

The Flyers advance to play at South Webster at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

In the girls Division II sectional, Eastern Brown topped South Point 8-1.
