IFD battles two blazes

Two house fires within a little more than 24 hours have kept Ironton firefighters busy.

Monday evening, fire caused heavy damage to a house at 319 S. Seventh St.

Ironton Fire Department Inspector Mike Mahlmeister said the fire appears to have started in an attic and was tough to battle because of remodeling and layers of roofing that helped to conceal the flames.

It is being considered electrical in nature.

On Sunday, a fire at 2728 S. Ninth St. appears to have started in or near a floor furnace. That house sustained considerable smoke and fire damage. One occupant was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Mahlmeister said both fires are considered accidental and unrelated.
