Name released in man killed by train

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a man struck and killed by a freight train in Huntington.

Huntington Police say 53-year-old Wayne B. Morris apparently was trying to cross tracks when he was struck by a CSX train about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police say Morris was wearing dark clothes and described the accident scene as poorly lit.

Sgt. John Williams says the train’s engineer spotted Morris, but didn’t have enough time to stop.

Columbus Jazz returns to SSU

PORTSMOUTH — This season the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association in partnership with Shawnee State University has scheduled the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

“This is the seventh season for the Columbus Jazz Orchestra to perform at the Vern Riffe Center,” said Carl Daehler, executive director of the center.

The Columbus Jazz Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Byron Stripling, will present a “tap your foot” style of entertainment.

This season’s performance will celebrate jazz royalty with the music of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Lionel Hampton.

The concert will feature soloist, Dwight Lenox.

His fluid style lends itself to a vast repertoire from Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, James Ingram, Stevie Wonder, Lou Rawls and many more.

Gravity defying dancers at the Paramount

ASHLAND, Ky. — Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company will bring its explosive, gravity-defying dance performance to the Paramount Arts Center, Monday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.

More than 60 dancers will bring their fast-paced fun and humor to the stage.

Bold dances, colorful costumes and a high energy will keep the audience on its feet.

As a special treat, a pre-performance OPEN rehearsal is scheduled from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Seating for that rehearsal is limited and you must call for reservations.

Haunt the library Oct. 29

ASHLAND, Ky. — Children 12 and under are invited to visit Boyd County Public Library to get some treats.

Haunt the Library will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Ashland, Catlettsburg and Summit branches. Children can hear some spooky stories and then trick-or-treat at the various departments.

Halloween bags will be provided.

Children who attend regular programs next week (Toddler Time, Stories Before Bedtime, Preschool Story Hour) are encouraged to attend in costume, and will also get treats.

Also, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29, library staff and members of the Teen Library Council will be passing out candy at the front entrance of Main.
