RIO GRANDE — It’s not often you can travel and still have the homecourt advantage.

But that will be the case for P.J. Rase when the Rio Grande RedStorm play Glenville State Monday in the Eric Sparks Memorial Game sat Chesapeake High School.

The 6-foot-2 Rase was an All-Ohio guard at Chesapeake under former coach Norm Persin.

RedStorm head coach Ken French wanted the game to be played at Chesapeake since this is Rase’s senior year and his brother Kyle is also a member of the team. P.J. Rase is the only returning starter for the RedStorm.

“I think it’s important. We’re just trying to reach out and be in a different community and try to benefit the same cause, but let some other people experience what Rio Grande basketball is and to be around the program,” said French.

The Rio Grande women will start the night at 5:30 followed by the men’s game around 7:30 p.m.

Collins back in ring

The Atom Bomb has exploded again.

Adam Collins, known in boxing circles as The Atom Bomb, shook off the cobwebs of a three-year layoff and returned to the ring last week in convincing fashion.

Collins posted a four-round decision over Mike McFail of Baltimore in a cruiserweight bout.

Collins won the first three rounds and hung on in the fourth round as McFail pressed the action.

Now 7-2, the Ironton High School graduate said he quit boxing for several reasons but couldn’t stay away.

“I was off due to a contract with my former manager/trainer and no desire to fight for him any more,” said Collins.

“I let the contract expire and the opportunity arose to fight local.”
