COAL GROVE — The second half belonged to the Coal Grove Hornets and Oakie Haynes.

After a scoreless first half, Haynes scored on touchdown runs of 72, 15 and 73 yards as the Hornets won their first Ohio Valley Conference championship outright since 1996 as they blanked the Fairland Dragons 20-0 Friday.

Haynes finished with 237 yards rushing on 18 carries. The Hornets rolled up 361 total yards including 347 on the ground in 49 attempts.

Haynes ran 72 yards with 9:48 left in the third quarter and went 15 yards for a score just before the end of the quarter.

Coal Grove (9-1, 5-0) got a strong defensive effort as they limited the high-powered Fairland offense to 209 total yards. Chad Fisher ran 13 times for 66 yards but Matt Bloomfield was held to 24 yards on 10 attempts.

Coal Grove clinched a playoff berth and could play at Oak Hill next Friday in Division V.

Fairland ends the season 6-4 and 3-2 in the OVC. They needed a win to earn at least a share of the title.

Ironton 41, Warren 12

VINCENT — Quarterback Ethan Preston ran for a career-high 124 yards on just seven carries as the Ironton Fighting Tigers ended the regular season with a 41-12 rout of the Warren Warriors Friday.

Ironton is now 8-2 and finishes 5-1 in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League. The game marked the final SEOAL football game for the Fighting Tigers who will become an independent next fall.

The Fighting Tigers will host a Region 15 Division IV playoff game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, probably against Sparta Highland.

Tres Wilks ran 53 yards for the first Ironton touchdown and returned an interception 40 yards to set up Keith Wetzel’s 7-yard run that pushed the lead to 14-0.

Ironton had 390 yards rushing and in total yards.

Ironton led 35-0 when coach Bob Lutz emptied his bench starting at the midway mark of the third quarter.

Kaleb Wolfe eclipsed 1,000 yards for the season as he ran 29 times for 128 yards and scored both Warren touchdowns. However, Wolfe managed only 32 yards on 14 carries against Ironton’s first unit.

The Warriors as a team managed just 4 nets yards rushing and 96 total yards against Ironton’s first defensive unit.

Chesapeake 50, South Point 8

CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Panthers amassed 409 total yards — all on the ground — as they rolled to the easy win over South Point.

Gabriel Freyre ran 11 times for 170 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Panthers (4-6, 3-2) who won three of their last four games. Peter Hintz had a big night as he ran 10 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns.

All of the touchdown runs by Freyre and Hintz were double-digit distances. Freyre had TD runs of 38 and 50 in the first quarter while Hintz went 42, 64 and 15 yards for touchdowns.

Rock Hill 55, River Valley 16

PEDRO — The Rock Hill Redmen exploded for 566 total yards and rolled past the River Valley Raiders 55-6 Friday in an Ohio Valley conference game.

Jesse Lane had 87 yards to lead the Redmen who had 14 different running backs carry the ball.

Rock Hill quarterback Will McCollister was 11-of-16 passing for 276 yards and two interceptions. Mitchell Davenport caught five passes for 84 yards, Jeremy Blagg grabbed a pair for 78 yards, Josh Malone had one for 55, and Trey Wilds one catch for 40 yards.

Symmmes Valley 40, South Gallia 6

WILLOW WOOD — The Symmes Valley Vikings saved their best for last.

In the final regular season game, the Vikings shut down the South Gallia Rebels’ offense as they coasted to a 40-6 win Friday night.

The Vikings limited the Rebels to just 148 total yards including 31 carries for 90 yards rushing as a team.

Evan Herrell ran four times for 105 yards including a 77-yard run on the first play of the game that gave Symmes Valley a 6-0 lead. Scott Dial came off the bench to run twice for 62 yards and a 59-yard score.

Kyle Bowen had a 6-yard TD run and Justin Payne scored on a 9-yarrd run following an interception by Grant Foster.

Symmes Valley scored 28 points in the second quarter to lead 34-0 at the half.

South Gallia was held to 92 net yards rushing, all against the Vikings’ second unit.

Symmes Valley is now 8-2 on the season and will await for Sunday’s announcement of who they will play next Saturday in the first round of the playoffs.
