Date changed for bridge dedication

SOUTH POINT — The ribbon cutting ceremony to rename the U.S. 52 bridge overpass on Solida Road for long-time South Point Mayor William Gaskin has been changed to Sunday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m.

Pushed back from its originally scheduled date of Nov. 7; the event will rename the frequently used overpass the “William A. Gaskin Bridge.” The ceremony is sponsored by the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.

First announced at the chamber’s annual awards dinner on Oct. 15 by the Ohio Department of Transportation, the ribbon cutting will include an uncovering of the display sign in Gaskin’s honor.

A reception will immediately follow at the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce office.

William Gaskin has been mayor of South Point since 1979 and has been a crucial figure in the growth of the community.

Gaskin is responsible for improving the municipal park, creating a boat ramp park, resurfacing the village streets, expanding water and sewer services, and instrumental in developing the U.S. 52 overpass.

Gaskin has served on the Ohio Public Works Committee, Ohio Mayor’s Association, Ohio Municipal League, Lawrence Economic Development Corporation, and the Huntington/Ironton Empowerment Zone Committee to establish the Point Industrial Park.
