George Stanley Shafer, 91, of Ironton, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at his residence.
The Polkadotte, Ohio native was born Aug. 26, 1918, the son of the late Creed William and Lotie Sheets Shafer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Laura Louise Clark Shafer, who died in February 1997.
He was a 1936 graduate of Mason-Aid High School. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran where he served with the 338th Engineers Regiment in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Shafer received the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Meritorious Unit Medal and the European African Middle Medal, for his service to our country. He retired after 10 years of service with Dutch Miller Chevrolet, where he worked in the parts dept. He was also a former mechanic and parts manager for Jack Wolfe Chevrolet for more than 25 years. He attended Pine Street Methodist Church in Ironton and was a member of Lawrence Chapel Methodist in Polkadotte. He was also a member of the Symmes Valley V.F.W. Post 2761, and former U.C.T. member. He lived in Ironton since 1948.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Shafer and three brothers, Alva Shafer, Clarence Shafer, and Ernest Shafer.
He is survived by two sons, Wendell Shafer and Leland Shafer both of Ironton; a daughter, Wanda Faye Shafer of Ironton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.
