SOUTH POINT — It’s back for a second season giving youth another choice when it comes to playing basketball.

That’s the King’s Court, the basketball program at Tri-State Baptist Temple, with games to start the first of the year. Registration is under way now.

“We felt like it really met a real need in a lot of families in our community, Tim Jenkins, pastor of Tri-State Baptist, said. “We had so much interest at the end of the year by folks who came to visit and watch other children play. They said, ‘Hey, we want our children to play.’”

The program is open to children from kindergarten through sixth grade. Girls have the option of playing basketball or becoming a cheerleader.

“Last year we had children from Wheelersburg, Ironton, Coal Grove, Chesapeake, South Point, Ashland and Huntington,” Jenkins said.

There will be an evaluation tryout on Dec. 12 where program coordinators hope to have all youth signed up. The season will run from January to March.

The fee is $35 that covers the cost of a uniform and trophies for an end-of-season awards banquet. Practices are on Saturdays.

“The environment here is a good environment,” Jenkins said. “There is no pressure put on children to win. We do encourage them all to enjoy playing the game. We try to work hard to teach them the fundamentals of the game at an equal level.”
