‘Champagne and Chocolate’ fund-raiser set for Dec. 11

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Women’s Heart Board at St. Mary’s Regional Heart Institute will sponsor the “Women’s Night Out: Champagne and Chocolate” fund-raiser on Friday, Dec. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Miller’s Home, part of the Huntington Christmas Home Tour.

The cost is $40 per person, which includes champagne, chocolate and heavy hors d’oeuvres. All proceeds go to uninsured and underinsured women for preventive testing for heart disease.

Those interested in attending the fund-raiser should call St. Mary’s Regional Heart Institute at (304) 526-6029 by Monday, Dec. 7 to register.

Christmas With Dignity registration is Thursday

IRONTON — St. Paul Lutheran Church will have registration for its annual Christmas With Dignity 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Again this year, the church will give away boxes of frozen food to approximately 650 needy area families.

The actual giveaway will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 but registration is required to receive a food box.

St. Paul pastor, the Rev. David Ritchie, said the food boxes contain high protein frozen foods that can feed a family of four for 4-5 days.

The church is located at Sixth and Center streets in Ironton.

Hip Hop concert set for Saturday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A live Appalachian Hip-Hop showcase is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 at Shamrock’s Pub in Huntington, W.Va.

The event will include MCs, DJs, breakers and two 3-piece bands. Worldsound Entertainment is also filming the showcase as the main event for its first feature-length documentary.

“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a while now, and with all the negativity surrounding nightlife in Huntington, we wanted to make a statement about hip-hop here in Huntington.

This showcase has artists coming in from a 50-mile radius and beyond, as well as from the Huntington area. It was our goal to show that hip-hop can bring all kinds of people together, peacefully, in a scene that’s incredibly creative,” Worldsound Chief Executive Officer Drew Carter explained.

Worldsound will film live performances by Fam Click and Menace, from Portsmouth, Family Conspiracy, DJ Illspin, and D.O.Ceasar, from Huntington, Spirit Molecule and DJ Squeezle, from Charleston, W,Va., Reason from Columbus, as well as other performances.

In a prepared statement, Carter said hip-hop may not often be the first thing that comes to mind when “West Virginia” and “music” are mentioned together, but he said local indie hip-hop is alive and well in the Huntington area.

Local businesses have taken up the cause; the event is sponsored by Toro Loco, Front Row Video and Grindhouse Skateboard / Tattooing of Portsmouth, and Java Joint and Scent from Heaven of Huntington, among others.
