Jewelry theft at Jo-Lin nets arrest

IRONTON — An Ashland, Ky., woman has been arrested in connection with the theft of jewelry from a patient at an area nursing home.

Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey said Tina Bailey, 36, of 216 Carl Perkins Drive, was scheduled to appear Friday in Ironton Municipal Court for arraignment on one count of theft.

On Tuesday, a 74-year-old patient at Jo-Lin Health Center had reported rings and other items of jewelry missing from her room. Bailey was employed at Jo-Lin at the time of the incident.

All of the allegedly stolen property was recovered, Carey said.

‘Christmas With Dignity’ registration times scheduled

IRONTON — St. Paul Lutheran Church will have registration for its annual Christmas With Dignity 5-7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the church.

Again this year, the church will give away boxes of frozen food to approximately 650 needy area families. The actual giveaway will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 but registration is required to receive a food box.

St. Paul pastor, the Rev. David Ritchie, said the food boxes contain high protein frozen foods that can feed a family of four for 4-5 days.

The church is located at Sixth and Center streets in Ironton.

OLBH Urgent Care expands hours

IRONTON — Earlier this year, Ironton Urgent Care (1005 East Ring Road, Ironton) began Sunday hours and has now expanded those hours to better accommodate patients.

The new Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ironton Urgent Care is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

From flu and cold, to cuts, temperatures and twisted ankles, Ironton Urgent Care offers care for non-emergency situations.

Located in the Ironton Hills Shopping Plaza, the center treats everyday illnesses and injuries.

Swine flu shot clinic slated

IRONTON — The Lawrence County Health Department will be giving HINI flu shots at the health department Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

Shots are for the following groups: pregnant women; parents and caregivers of new babies (babies under 6 months of age can’t get flu vaccine); health care workers; babies 6 months to adults 24 years of age; adults 24-64 who have underlying health problems (diabetes, asthma or other respiratory disease, weakened immune system, diseases of kidney, liver, heart or blood, neurological or neuromuscular disease)

As more vaccine becomes available and the initial tier group is taken care of, the department may be able to offer vaccine to others. That is expected to happen in two to three weeks, according to Georgia Dillon with the department.

People may pre-register at www.lawcohd.org. and are to bring the registration form with them to the clinic.

All children under 10 need a second injection or spray in about 28 days. They can also attend these clinics.

The department will also be at Symmes Valley school Dec. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Holiday music at the Boyd Library

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library will celebrate the holiday season by hosting a series of free musical performances by area residents and groups.

The holiday concert series starts Dec. 14 and runs through Dec. 23, on weekdays. There are still a few open dates. All are at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave., and start at either noon or 6:30 p.m. Each lasts 30-45 minutes. Cookies and drinks will be served.

JP Morgan Chase continues support for SeniorWise Program Cabell Huntington Hospital

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Cabell Huntington Hospital’s SeniorWise Program has received a $25,000 donation from the JP Morgan Chase Foundation to continue providing financial services and information to Tri-State seniors.

The SeniorWise program is managed by Cabell Huntington Hospital’s Senior Services Department and has helped provide free health screenings and educate seniors on a variety of topics, including Medicare and emergency care. SeniorWise is a free program designed to meet the needs of older adults who want to maintain their quality of life as they age. Memberships are free and participants are eligible for benefits that include discounted hospital and banking services.

Through the partnership with JP Morgan Chase, Cabell Huntington Hospital is able to reach out to seniors of all stages of life to provide the connection to resources and support systems available to meet their needs. More than 4,000 people over the age of 50 participate.

Groovaloo to visit Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH — The dance team Groovaloo will debut at Shawnee State University with hip-hop, break dancing and “jaw-dropping” displays of athleticism at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at SSU’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

On Wednesday, Dec. 16, the 15-member cast will be performing on national TV on the season finale of “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Groovaloo is best known for their breakout winning performance on NBC’s “Superstars of Dance” and stage performances at the El Portal Theatre in Los Angeles and the Joyce Theater in New York City.

Paramount offering Christmas concerts

ASHLAND, Ky. — John Berry performs his Christmas show “Return to Bethlehem” Saturday, Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. His wide-ranging tenor voice rings in the Christmas season of music. The show is presented by WTCR. Seats are available at $23, $28 and $30 each.

Two orchestras combine for show

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Cabell-Midland and Huntington High Orchestras will combine to perform their annual Christmas Concert on Friday December 18, 2009 in the Huntington High Auditorium.

The orchestra will be performing festive holiday music. The concert is at 7 p.m. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

TSYO to host holiday concert

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Tri-State Youth Orchestra will be presenting their annual Christmas Concert on Sunday December 13, 2009 in the Ballroom of ARTS Renaissance Center.

The orchestra will be performing music for the season. Admission is $5, children under 12 free. The doors open at 7:30.

BCPL showing new Harry Potter movie first time on Dec. 9

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is showing “Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince” on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Main Branch.

The movie starts at 5 p.m. The branch is located at 1740 Central Ave. Admission is free and some refreshments are provided. Additional snacks can be purchased.

The movie, rated PG, is the sixth installment in the hugely popular series based on the books by J.K. Rowling. In this one, Harry is in his sixth year at Hogwart’s School of Wizardry & Witchcraft, and finds a mysterious book.
