Some people try simply to tell the true Christmas story. The congregation at Zoar Baptist Church in Coal Grove do their best to bring it to life each year.

In today’s over-commercialized world where the meaning of the holidays sometimes get lost amidst the sales, the gifts and the colorful decorations featuring elves, reindeer, snowmen, and old Saint Nick, it is refreshing to see that some people haven’t forgotten the real story.

All those things are fine as long as we don’t lose sight of the reason for the season.

Around 70 volunteers from Zoar really get it — and they are happy to share it with the community.

Once again this year, they will present a live nativity that is more than just a scene. It is a full-blown play that lasts nearly an hour and tells the complete Christmas story from the birth of Jesus and spans through his death, resurrection and even the future coming of Christ.

The church will host the nativity drama at 7 p.m. Dec. 16, 17 and 18. A rain date will be Saturday, Dec. 19.

The free event often draws a large crowd, as it should. The church will also offer free coffee and hot chocolate.

This is a great family activity this holiday season that can help bridge the gap from Christmas lights to the reason we celebrate the holiday in the first place.
