SOUTH POINT — It was easy. The scary part is it could have been easier.

South Point took a commanding 39-6 at the half and never looked back as the Lady Pointers rolled past the Fairland Lady Dragons 79-40 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We played well, but we missed a lot of easy shots around the basket. We need to stay focused,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

Chesapeake 60,

Coal Grove 48

CHESAPEAKE — It was a tale of two halves.

Coal Grove controlled the first half, but the Chesapeake Lady Panthers asserted themselves in the second half as they beat the Lady Hornets 60-48 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Coal Grove had an 8-point halftime lead before the Lady Panthers used a big fourth quarter to get the win.

“In the first half we were sluggish and Coal Grove played well,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.

“We played more as a team in the second half and the result was a 20-point turnaround.”

Coal Grove — coming off a 31-28 win over Wellston — turned in its best performance of the season.

“They have a good group of kids back. It was a game I felt like we got better. We got a solid game from Chelsea Delong and Ashley Adkins had a nice floor game. Kim Hanshaw is only 5-7 and she was down there inside battling,” said Coal Grove coach Nick Miller.

Kimmie Bennett had 9 points in the first quarter as Chesapeake took a 13-12 lead. But Chelsea Delong hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter as Coal Grove took a 29-21 halftime lead.

The Lady Hornets didn’t score until the final two minutes of the third quarter and held onto a 36-35 lead.

But Amanda Ruffner — in her first game back from an injury — scored all 11 points in the fourth quarter as Chesapeake outscored Coal Grove 25-12.

“Their experience took over. Once we got behind, we kind of panicked. We had to foul at the end and they made some shots,” said Miller.

“The girls turned their defense up in the fourth quarter,” said Ball.

Sarah Mayo and Bennett had 11 points each to lead Chesapeake (3-1, 1-0).

Delong finished with 16 points, Kelli McMackin 11 and Adkins 10 for Coal Grove (1-3, 0-1).

Symmes Valley 46,

Green 40

FRANKLIN FURNACE — When the offense isn’t working, try the defense.

Symmes Valley shot just 33 percent from the field, but the Lady Vikings turned 19 steals into points as they beat the Green Lady Bobcats 46-40 Thursday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“We played pretty well on both ends of the floor tonight,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Lisa Bryant. “Our press caused a few turnovers that tuned into points for us on the other end.”

Brooke Skinner had a big all-around game with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals to lead the Lady Vikings (3-2, 3-1). Jessie Morris added 7 points and 5 steals and Kayla Hayes grabbed 6 rebounds.

Adrianne Blankenship scored 13 points and Lauren Jones and Gidget Timberman 12 each to pace Green (2-2, 2-2).

Skinner scored 6 points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 14-7 lead.

Green got within 22-17 at the half and Blankenship scored 6 points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 29-28.

But Skinner had 7 points and Hayes 6 as the Lady Vikings outscored Green 17-12 in the fourth quarter. Jones had half her points in the quarter for Green.

“I think we were more patient on the offensive end tonight,” said Bryant.

“We are still getting out of position on defense and we are still not boxing out and rebounding like we should.”

On Monday, Symmes Valley plays at Beaver Eastern in a 6 p.m. game. Green hosts Portsmouth Notre Dame.
