SOUTH POINT — What happened early is what cost the South Point Lady Pointers late.
After falling behind by 11 points the first half, the Lady Pointers rallied in the second half only to fall short of the Oak Hill Lady Oaks 75-69 in a battle of unbeatens.
“They hit some 3s early and out-rebounded us early. We got in a hole and it was hard to dig out. They’re a really good rebounding team,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.
Jalynn Bradburn led South Point (6-1) with 23 points. Allison Mitchell scored 18 points and Kayla Fletcher added 13.
Oak Hill (6-0) got 2 points from Rebecca Puckett. Mikie Strite and Karissa Adkins had 16 points each and Lakin Caudill added 12.
The game was tied 8-8 early, but Mitchell picked up her second foul and went to the bench and Oak Hill took advantage to go up 25-16.
Puckett had 9 points and Strite hit a pair of 3-pointers in the opening quarter while Fletcher scored 6 for the Lady Pointers.
Mitchell came back to scored 6 in the second quarter while Bradburn and Fletcher got 4 each. But Puckett scored 6 and Strite hit two more 3-pointers to put the Lady Oaks up 44-33 at the break.
Bradburn and Mitchell combined for 14 points to offset 8 by Puckett as the Lady Pointers got within 58-50 at the end of the third quarter.
Bradburn drained a trey and scored 8 points as South Point got within 3 points in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Oaks converted 5 of 6 from the line down the stretch to preserve the win.
“Making their foul shots and hitting five 3s was the difference in a game like this,” said Adams.
South Point plays at Ironton Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Ironton Classic.
