WILLOW WOOD — Once the Chesapeake Lady Panthers got going, they couldn’t stop.
Leading by just 6 points at halftime, the Lady Panthers exploded in the third quarter and went on to beat the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings 66-37 Monday.
Chesapeake coach Chris Ball said the scoring spurt was due to the play of point guard Sarah Mayo and the inside tandem of Amanda Ruffner and Kimmie Bennett.
“We came out and took over inside with Bennett and Ruffner. The key was Mayo setting the tone of the game with running our break,” said Ball.
“We took advantage of our size in the half-court game and Mayo getting us out and running for easy points.”
Ruffner had 23 points to lead all scorers. Bennett had 14 and Mayo finished with 9.
Brooke Skinner had 10 for the Lady Vikings (3-5).
Mayo and Skinner countered each other with 5 points each as Chesapeake took an 11-9 lead.
Chesapeake went up 25-19 at the half but then Ruffner had 13 points and Bennett 6 in the third quarter as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Vikings 27-10 and pulled away to a 52-23 cushion.
Chesapeake hosts unbeaten Tolsia, W.Va., at 1 p.m. Saturday.
