McARTHUR — Things turned for the bad as quickly as they had turned good.

A couple of quick 3-pointers enabled the Vinton County Lady Vikings to rally and slip past the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 58-55 Monday.

Coal Grove went into the fourth quarter with a one-point lead, but two quick turnovers led to a pair of 3-pointers by Tori Dixon for the Lady Vikings.

Vinton County then converted 8 of 9 free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.

“We had a couple of quick turnovers and then they get some quick points,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller. “It was just one of those games where they made a few shots and we didn’t.”

Coal Grove (3-4) was led by Cheslea Delong with 18 points and Kelli McMackin with 17. Ashley Adkins added 11 points.

Dixon had 19 points for Vinton County (2-7). Kelsey Griffith scored 13 while Brittany Stewart and Allison Graves had 10 each.

“We played a team with five seniors who we beat by only six points at home last year. We had a chance to win, so our young girls are starting to come around,” said Miller.

All five starters scored as the Lady Vikings took a 14-11 first quarter lead. Adkins hit a pair of 3-pointers and Delong scored 5 points for all of Coal Grove’s total.

Delong and McMackin scored 5 points each in the second quarter but Griffith had 7 points and Dixon hit two 3-pointers as Vinton County took a 32-25 halftime lead.

McMackin drained a pair of treys and Delong scored 6 more points in the third quarter as Coal Grove rallied to take a 44-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
