CHESAPEAKE — This was a keeper.
The Chesapeake Lady Panthers faced one of the top Class AA teams in West Virginia Saturday and came away with a 47-44 win over the Tolsia Lady Rebels.
“That was a good quality win for us. We were searching for that,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball. “Overall, it was a tremendous effort defensively by our team.”
Chesapeake (5-3) was led by Amanda Ruffner with a game-high 25 points. Sarah Mayo added 12 points including 7-of-8 from the foul line.
Kara Pollinger scored 14 and Katie Lahoda 8 for Tolsia (6-2).
“We knew Tolsia had a really good basketball team. Pollinger is an all-state point guard. We felt happy keeping her at 14 points. Allison Chapman did a nice job on her and we did a good job helping out. It was a team effort,” said Ball.
Pollinger scored 6 points in the first quarter to offset 7 points by Ruffner as Tolsia took a 13-10 lead.
But Chesapeake held Tolsia to 6 points in the second quarter as the Lady Panthers rallied to take a 23-19 lead.
Runnfer had 7 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake extended its lead to 34-28.
Pollinger got 6 points in the fourth quarter, but Mayo converted 4 of 4 at the line to seal the win.
Chesapeake plays at Green on Monday.
