Defensive effort carries Lady Pointers past Lady Hornets

COAL GROVE — When the “O” is missing, just find your “D.”

The South Point Lady Pointers had trouble on offense, but the defense carried them past the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 66-35 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Lady Pointers were playing for the first time since Dec. 22, but Tinesha Taylor and Kayla Fletcher sparked the defensive effort.

“We played kind of sluggish, but we haven’t played in a month. We played pretty well defensively. We got after it,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

“Taylor played well defensively and Fletcher did a great job getting steals.”

Fletcher scored 21 points to lead the Lady Pointers (8-1, 3-0). Jalynn Bradburn added 13 points, Allison Mitchell 12 and Taylor 11.

Coal Grove (3-5, 1-2) was led by Kelli McMackin who scored 15 points including four 3-pointers. Chelsea Delong added 8 points.

South Point jumped out to a 27-6 lead as Fletcher scored 11 points. Taylor and Mitchell scored 6 each.

Fletcher scored 6 of South Point’s 10 points in the second quarter and it was 37-14 at the half.

Bradburn scored 7 points including a trey and Mitchell added 4 points as South Point opened up a 55-20 lead after three quarters.

McMackin hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 9 points in the fourth quarter. South Point had six different players score.
