CHESAPEAKE — Glance through the boxscore and you might miss Jordan Bruton’s name.

But watch the game and there’s no mistake Bruton is on the floor. Just ask the opposing team’s point guard.

Bruton clamped down on the Eastern Warriors’ point guard Tyler Knabb for three quarters to spark the South Point Pointers to a 68-43 rout Saturday as part of the “Beasts of the Southeast” boys’ basketball classic held at Chesapeake High School.

“We played great defense and it starts with the point guard defense by Jordan Bruton. He did a super job. He locked down on their point guard,” said South Point coach Chris Barnes.

But Bruton got plenty of help from his teammates as the Pointers won their sixth in a row. The Pointers held the Warriors to only five field goals in the first half as they built a 30-17 lead.

Knabb finished with 19 points, but he had only 4 in the first half and got 9 in the fourth quarter. Of his total, 8 points came from the foul line.

“That’s four games in a row that we’ve played the best defense I’ve seen since I’ve been coaching. We haven’t lost a game since Matt Button came back (from a broken leg) and he’s a role player who plays great defense,” said Barnes.

“I was amazed with the intensity we had after playing a late game on Friday.”

South Point put the game away by outscoring Eastern 22-8 in the third quarter to lead 52-25. Blake Barnes lit up the scoreboard with 10 points in the quarter and finished with a game-high 25.

Ethan Prater scored 14 points for the Pointers (7-3) while Winkler had 10 points — all in the first half.

Taylor Little added 15 points for Eastern Brown (8-2).
