Spring Valley wins Panther meet
CHESAPEAKE — It was just nice to wrestle again.
For the first time since early December, the Chesapeake Panthers were back on the mat as they hosted the Panther Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
“It’s been a while. It was just nice not to have to go against each other again,” said Chesapeake coach Phil Davis.
Spring Valley won the tournament with a 5-0 record. The Fairland Dragons were second at 4-1 followed by Lincoln County and Winfield at 3-2, host Chesapeake and Ashland 1-4.
The Panthers had two individual champions with Justin Pitts first in the 103-pound class and Shane Pelfrey winning at 171. They are each 11-0 on the season.
“They both wrestled pretty well. We had some other kids who wrestled well and probably should have had a couple more champions,” said Davis.
Finishing second for the Panthers was Gabe Freyre in the 160-pound class and Richard McFarland at 285.
Fairland also had two champions as Wayne Moore took first at 112 pounds and Garrett Wireman won in the 145-pound division.
The Dragons’ J.B. Bennett was second at 152 and Mack Dickess was runner-up in the 215 class.
