The Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization has notified the Lawrence County Commission the social service agency plans to be the managing partner for a housing rehabilitation project in the South Point area.

In a letter dated Jan. 8, CAO Executive Director D.R. Gossett said the CAO will supervise The Point Villas on Private Drive 268 off County Road 1 in Perry Township.

Fourteen existing buildings will be rehabilitated, with each building having a single-family, three bedroom, two-bath garden-style apartment with a separate garage.

Another 19 homes in the area will be demolished.

“A large, secure recreational area will also be created,” Gossett said in his letter.

The project will be paid for with both public and private funds. Work should commence later this year.

Commissioners acknowledged affordable housing would be a welcome addition to the county.

“What they’re going to do is much needed,” County Commissioner Doug Malone said. “They’ve got a nice area there.”
