COAL GROVE — A three-headed monster devoured the River Valley defense.

Chelsea Delong, Kelli McMackin and Ashley Adkins combined for 54 points as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets beat the Lady Raiders 60-53 Monday in n Ohio Valley Conference game.

Delong had a game-high 27 points while McMackin scored 14 points — she hit four 3-pointers — and Adkins added 13.

“McMackin, Delong and Adkins all gave us a nice game offensively. It was a nice three-pronged attack. It made it hard for them to stop,” said Coal Grove coach Nick Miller.

“We played a nice first half defensively. We held them down for three quarters.”

McMackin drained three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Delong scored 8 points as Coal Grove took a commanding 20-6 lead.

Brooke Marcum scored 10 points in the second quarter for the Raiders, but Delong matched the total with 10 of her own and the Lady Hornets’ lead was 33-22 at the break.

Adkins and Delong combined for 12 points in the third quarter as each team scored 14 points and it was 47-36.

Coal Grove led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter before Cady Gilmore drained three trifectas and got the Lady Raiders with 56-53. But River Valley was forced to foul and the Lady Hornets went 4-for-4 at the line to seal the win.

The Lady Hornets were 7-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

“We had a pretty comfortable lead and (Gilmore) hit some threes,” said Miller.

Marcum had 18 points and Gilmore 14 for River Valley (6-9, 1-6).

Coal Grove plays Poca, W.Va., at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Huntington St. Joe Invitational.
