CHESAPEAKE — It was a game to determine who is currently the best team in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The key word here is team.

The South Point Lady Pointers gave a strong team performance as they beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 57-33 Wednesday in a battle for first place in the OVC.

‘I can’t point to one person. Everyone did a great job defensively,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

South Point is now 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the OVC. Chesapeake saw its eight-game winning streak snapped and fell to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the league.

“We had a lot of unforced errors and we had trouble making that first pass. When that happens, South Point is really good at capitalizing on those mistakes,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball.

Kayla Fletcher scored 17 points, Jalynn Bradburn 14 and Tinesha Taylor 10 to lead the Lady Pointers’ offense.

Amanda Ruffner scored 14 points — all in the first half — to pace Chesapeake.

Four difference players scored 4 points each in the first quarter as South Point took a 16-10 lead. Ruffner had 8 of Chesapeake’s points.

Fletcher had 9 points as South Point went on a 12-2 run to start the second quarter. But Chesapeake closed the half with a 10-5 run of its own and trailed 33-22 at the break.

Bradburn scored 6 points in the third quarter and South Point held Chesapeake to just 3 points and built a 49-25 lead.

The Lady Panthers managed just two field goals in the second half.

“Their athleticism took over. We made a few runs at them cut 16 to 11 at half, but they just kept coming and we didn’t have any answer for them,” said Ball.

South Point faces No. 2-ranked Scott, W.Va., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Huntington St. Joe Invitational. Chesapeake visits Oak Hill on Monday.
