PROCTORVILLE — How many you miss isn’t nearly as important sometimes as when they are missed.

Some missed clutch free throws came back to haunt Fairland as the Lady Dragons lost 57-54 in overtime Thursday to the River Valley Lady Raiders in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Lady Dragons missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw attempt with three seconds left in regulation, then missed another one-and-one trailing by one with just 41 seconds left in overtime.

“Our percentage wasn’t that bad, but we missed the at crucial times,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

“But that isn’t what cost us the game. We played good defense until the last three minutes of the fourth quarter. We had some costly turnovers. We simply didn’t make winning plays that good teams make.”

Megan Brooks scored 7 points as the Lady Dragons jumped out to a 22-10 first quarter lead. But turnovers hurt Fairland in the second quarter and Brooke Marcum scored 6 points at River Valley got within 31-26 at the half.

Fairland led 39-33 after three quarters only to have Kelsey Sands get 6 points in the fourth quarter as River Valley tied the game at 50-50.

River Valley outscored Fairland 7-4 in overtime to get the win.

Kennon Clarkson scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Fairland (3-12, 3-5). Jamie Phillips added 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Allie Neville scored 15 points, Sands 11 and Tracy Roberts 10 for River Valley (7-9, 2-6).
