HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — When South Point’s shots started to fall, so did the Scott Lady Skyhawks.
South Point had trouble connecting on its shots in the first half, but the offense and defense began to click in the second half as the Lady Pointers rolled past Scott 59-38 Thursday in the Huntington St. Joe Invitational semifinals.
“The first half we couldn’t buy a basket. The second half we finally started hitting them,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.
“I told the girls there was nothing we need to change, we just needed to hit the shots. We knew they would fall eventually.”
South Point (14-1) plays St. Joe at 8 p.m. Saturday in the title game. Scott — ranked No. 2 in Class AA entering the game — is now 11-3.
St. Joe is ranked No. 1 in Class A. The Lady Irish beat Ashland, Ky., 53-44 in the second game.
Kayla Fletcher scored 18 points to lead the Lady Pointers. Jalynn Bradburn had 14 and Allison Mitchell 11.
Kate Tadlock had 10 for Scott.
Mitchell and Fletcher scored 4 each in first quarter but Tadlock hit pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points as Scott took a 16-12 lead.
South Point trailed 23-21 at the half, but in the third quarter Fletcher drained two 3-pointers as she scored 8 points while Bradburn had 9 points to put the Lady Pointers up 47-33 to begin the second half.
Fletcher’s 6 points in the fourth quarter was more than Scott’s total of 5 points and the Lady Pointers continued to pull away.
“Defensively we got it going in the second half. We wore them down and I thought they got a little tired,” said Adams.
