SOUTH POINT — UCLA football coach Henry “Red” Sanders once said that, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”
The South Point Pointers are following that line of philosophy as they continue their winning ways including a 74-64 Ohio Valley Conference victory Friday over the Fairland Dragons.
“I don’t care what the score is or how it looks, it’s a win. We’re just trying to keep pace with Chesapeake,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes.
South Point and Chesapeake both won Friday and are tied for the OVC lead at 6-0. The Pointers are 10-4 overall.
Fairland slipped to 6-7 and 2-4 in the league.
“We can’t put four quarters together. We keep getting behind and then battling back. That’s been our M.O.,” said Fairland coach John McClung.
The Pointers used 3-point goals early and the strong shooting of Blake Barnes to beat the Dragons. Barnes finished with 23 points to lead the offense. Ethan Prater scored 15 and Tevin Mitchell scored 11.
Evan Salyers led Fairland with 24 points. Matt Bloomfield and Chad Fisher scored 10 each.
Mitchell hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Blake Barnes had 7 points as the Pointers took a 20-14 lead.
Barnes got 5 more points in the second quarter the South Point led 30-22 at the break.
Greg Taylor came off the bench to score 6 points in the third quarter to spark the Pointers as they outscored the Dragons 28-12 to build a 58-34 cushion.
South Point needed the cushion as Fairland blitzed the Pointers 30-16.
“We did a good job defensively except for the fourth quarter. Everything just got a little helter skelter,” said coach Barnes.
