PROCTORVILLE — Senior Night had just three seniors on the court and only one belonged to Fairland.

But the younger players gave veteran performances as the Lady Dragons won their fifth straight and beat the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets 62-48 Thursday.

“We’re a young team and they’re a young team, but both teams did a good job. I thought our girls played really well again,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

After Fairland led 14-12 at the end of first quarter, Stormi Spitzer stepped up and scored all 9 of her points in the second quarter to give the Lady Dragons a 29-22 lead at the break.

“Spitzer got us the lead and it was the way she played offensively and defensively that got us going,” said Buchanan.

The game slowed down into a defensive struggle in the third quarter as Fairland outscored Wellston just 7-4 and it was 36-26.

But Phillips got 11 points in the fourth quarter as Fairland erupted for 26 points. Taylor Mullens scored 7 of her 9 points and Tiffany Wires added 6 points for Wellston but Fairland pulled away to a 14-point win.

“We got in some foul trouble and they did, too, in the fourth quarter and both teams shot a lot of foul shots,” said Buchanan. “Phillips did a good job. Her points came in a lot of different ways.”

Freshmen Kayla Swiger scored 15 points and Jaimie Phillips had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Fairland. Keri Napier grabbed eight rebounds while Megan Brooks — Fairland’s lone senior — had five steals and two assists.

Wires scored 12 points and Jordan Davis 11 to pace Wellston.

Fairland (8-12) plays Ironton at 2:45 p.m. Saturday in the Div. III sectional tournament at Rock Hill.
