Veteran councilman ready to fill Gaskin’s post

Long-time councilman Bob Armstrong will become the interim mayor of the Village of South Point, filling the post left vacant upon the death of Mayor William “Bill” Gaskin.
Armstrong, in his role as president pro tem, was named acting mayor at the time of Gaskin’s illness late last year.
Armstrong, who was elected to council in 1967, is expected to continue as mayor through the remainder of Gaskin’s term, which would have been through 2011.
Gaskin, who served 30 years as the mayor, was instrumental in the formation of The Point Industrial Park, president of the Ohio Municipal League and the Ohio Association of Mayors as well as serving on the Ohio Public Works Committee, the Lawrence Economic Development Corp. and the Huntington/Ironton Empowerment Zone. Gaskin died on Feb. 5, at his home.
