ATHENS — When your game plan calls for you to do two important things and you don’t, you’ve got problems.

When the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings failed to do two crucial things Saturday they found themselves on the wrong end of a 79-45 score against the Eastern Meigs Lady Eagles in the Division IV sectional finals.

“When you go up against the No. 9 ranked team in the state, you have to do two things: rebound and take care of the ball,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Lisa Bryant.

“We didn’t do either of those today.”

The Lady Vikings had just 28 rebounds and committed 23 turnovers. To make matters worse, they were 20-of-66 from the floor including just 9-of-32 in the second half for 28 percent.

“We did not box out and we did not hit the boards,” said Bryant.

“We gave them too many second and third chances on the boards that we could not afford to do with a team like Eastern. Our turnovers were mostly unforced ones that we caused ourselves.”

Eastern led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and the Lady Vikings got 10 points from Jessie Morris in the second quarter to stay on the Lady Eagles’ heels at 37-25 at the half.

But cold shooting took over in the second half and the Lady Vikings managed only 7 points in the third quarter as they fell behind 61-32.

Morris led Symmes Valley (9-11) with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Brooke Skinner scored 12 to go with 8 rebounds.

The game not only marked the end of the season for the Lady Vikings but the end of the careers of seniors Erica Corn, Brooke Skinner, Chelsea Wall, Nikki Nance and Caitie Bloomfield.

“Our five seniors will be missed tremendously. They have been a huge part of our program for the past four years. This has truly been an honor to coach these seniors and I am very proud to have been their coach the past four years,” said Bryant.
