SOUTH POINT — Coming off a last-second loss in the sectional finals, South Point coach Dave Adams wasn’t sure how his team would respond.
He didn’t have to wait long for an answer.
The Lady Pointers bolted to a huge first quarter lead and rolled to a 56-27 win over the Chesapeake Lady Panthers Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“I wasn’t sure how we would play, but we came out and played pretty well and we came out and shot the ball well,” said Adams.
South Point is now 18-3 overall and clinched the OVC title at 9-0. Chesapeake ended the season 13-8 and 7-3 in the league.
Chesapeake coach Chris Ball said the Lady Panthers ended with a loss, but he still said it was a successful season.
“We accomplished our goal of 13 wins. Last year we were 12-9,” said Ball. “I thought it was a step forward. We had some good wins along the way and some tough losses.
“Our reserves were 16-4 which goes with trying to instill winning in our girls. We can take a lot of positives out of this season.”
Kayla Fletcher scored 15 points to lead three players in double figures. Jalynn Bradburn scored 12 and Allison Mitchell added 11. Tinesha Taylor — the team’s lone senior — had 6 points.
Amanda Ruffner scored 14 points to lead Chesapeake. Ruffner also had 7 rebounds and Kimmie Bennett grabbed 6.
Fletcher scored 13 points and Bradburn had 7 in the first quarter as the Lady Pointers raced to a 28-4 first quarter lead.
South Point put the game out of reach by building a 40-9 cushion at the break.
The Lady Pointers must still play River Valley in a league game to be scheduled.
