COAL GROVE — Instead of washing their mouths out with soap, the South Point Pointers used a victory bar.
The Pointers lost in the sectional finals on Saturday, but they still had a makeup game to play Tuesday and they bounced back with an 87-64 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Coal Grove Hornets.
“It was nice to go out with a win and to get that bad taste out of our mouths,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “The seniors played well and it was nice to win since they lost twice to Coal Grove last year.”
Blake Barnes poured in 26 points to lead four Pointers in double figures. Ethan Prater and Kyle Winkler scored 18 points each and Cody Taylor had 16.
Coal Grove (14-7, 5-5) was led by Cody Damron with 21 points. Devin Monnier scored 16 and Oakie Haynes 10 for the Hornets.
Barnes scored 14 points and Prater had 10 points in the first half as South Point took a 41-37 lead at the break. Damron had 15 of his points in the half.
Winkler scored 11 points in the third quarter and the Pointers were up 60-55.
Taylor scored 8 points in the fourth quarter and the Pointers outscored the Hornets 27-9 to pull away to the win.
South Point finished the season 13-8 and 8-2 in the OVC, good for second place.
“We tried to keep the game going up and down. We got a chance to look at how we’re going to play next year,” said coach Barnes.
