Panthers’ offense clicks in win over Tornadoes

RACINE — It was a tune-up and the Chesapeake Panthers clicking on all cylinders.

With a Division III district tournament semifinal game set for Sunday, the Panthers had just three turnovers in a 61-50 win over the Racine Southern Tornadoes Thursday.

Nathan Copley filled the nets with 27 points to lead three Panthers in double figures. Colin Kennedy scored 12 points and Austin McMaster had 11 for Chesapeake (17-4).

Southern — who plays Tuesday in the Division IV district semifinals — was led by Sean Coppick with 21 points. Michael Manuel added 13.

The Panthers went on top 19-12 at the end of the first quarter before Southern started to creep back into the game.

Southern trailed 33-27 at the half and cut the deficit to 41-37 at the end of the third quarter. But Chesapeake outscored the Tornadoes 20-13 in the fourth quarter to notch the win.

The Panthers play Piketon at 7:15 p.m. Sunday at the Ohio University Convocation Center.
