Scioto-52 bridge rehab to resume

CHILLICOTHE — Contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation have resumed operations for a bridge repair project in Scioto County this week, with lane width restrictions going into effect today.

According to Ohio Department of Transportation District 9 Deputy Director James Brushart, crews from the Velotta Company are rehabilitating a series of eight structures located on U.S. 52 in New Boston and Portsmouth.

The project zone is situated between S.R. 139 at New Boston and S.R. 140 near the eastern corporation limit of Portsmouth.

Crews from Velotta are relocating barrier wall in the west and eastbound directions on U.S. 52 where traffic will be maintained in one lane in each direction within the construction zone.

In addition, an 11’6” width restriction will be in effect at the 25-mile marker, or the Sciotoville overpass bridge near ST RT 335.

Motorists are advised to exercise additional caution and to expect possible intermittent periods of delay as a reduced speed limit is also in effect through the construction zone.

The Velotta Company of Sharon Center, was awarded a contract in the amount of approximately $2.54 million to complete the project, and the scheduled completion date is May 1.

InfoCision promotes Ironton resident

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — InfoCision Management Corporation is pleased to announce the promotion of Paula Pack of Ironton to program supervisor at the company’s Huntington call center.

As a program supervisor in the communications division, Pack will be responsible for running telephone-marketing programs.

Make a race car at BCPL March 20

ASHLAND, Ky. — Ever wondered what you could do with an empty toilet paper roll and some plastic pop bottle lids? Make a race car, that’s what.

Paper Tube Race Cars is the program at the Main Branch on Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. The branch is located at 1740 Central Ave.

The program is for kids ages 6-12. After making and decorating their car, kids can race against others. Each child gets a “bendable” driver.

ASHLAND, Ky. — Children 4-8 are invited to have some fun on St. Patrick’s Day at Boyd County Public Library.

An hour of stories, crafts and food – all green, of course! – starts at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. Those who attend (kids and parents) are encouraged to wear green.

Citizen Kane on the big screen Sunday

ASHLAND, Ky. — Another movie classic, Sunday, March 14 at 4 p.m. at the Paramount featuring Citizen Kane on the big screen.

Movie starts at 4 but come early for a little pre-show discussion provided by Dr. Darren Harris-Fain, professor at Shawnee State University.

Author and instructor, Harris-Fain teaches courses on American film history and popular culture.

Clavinova festival takes the stage

ASHLAND, Ky. — Piano students from across the Tri-state area are hosting their annual Clavinova Festival at the Paramount, Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.

This eventshowcases students performing on the Clavinova, a keyboard-like instrument where sounds and effects can be programmed in to enhance musical pieces.

ASHLAND, Ky. — Ritch Collins and friends will perform in the marquee room, Thursday, March 18 at the Paramount.

This Three-O Thursday is a birthday celebration for lengendary musician and poet, Jack Kerouac, who once stood in front of the Paramount.

Play showcases life of Anne Frank

ASHLAND, Ky. — “And Then They Came for me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank” will be performed on stage Friday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.

This multimedia play combines film interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with local actors recreating scenes from World War II and the concentration camps. Ed was Anne Frank’s first boyfriend, and she wrote about him in the beginning of her diary.

Eva was the same age as Anne Frank and lived in the same building. Her family went into hiding the same day as the Frank family, and they were also betrayed. On Eva’s 15th birthday, her family was arrested and sent to concentration camps. Eva and her mother survived, and after the war her mother married Otto Frank (Anne’s father). Part oral history, part dramatic action, part direct address and part remembrance, this production is a historical newsreel brought to life.

Grief support group begins April 8

ASHLAND, Ky. — A grief support group for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one will meet each Thursday, beginning April 8 through May 27, at King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC).

“Understanding our Grief” will be the focus and the group meets from 2 to 4 p.m. at KDMC’s Health Education Center (located in the lower level of the Lexington Avenue Parking Garage), 2201 Lexington Ave.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Celtic music concert

IRONTON — Put on your best green outfit and enjoy a free traditional Irish music concert as an early St. Patrick’s Day celebration at two Briggs Lawrence County Public Library locations Monday, March 15.

The Celtic music trio Kelley’s Bridge will perform at noon Monday at the Ironton library. Attendants may bring their own lunch to this brown bag concert.

Lawrence County residents Bruce Brown, Christine Hunt, and Herb Rose, who comprise Kelley’s Bridge, performed together for the first time on St. Patrick’s Day 2008.
