IRONTON — This July marks the 30th Anniversary of the Ohio University Southern Academy of Excellence Program.

The program has provided opportunities for academically advanced, highly motivated and talented elementary students in grades 1st through 8th to explore special topics in a college setting since 1980.

Now, Ohio University Southern is looking for those adults who attended during their elementary years to be part of the 30th Anniversary celebration.

“We want past participants to share their story with us,” says Janet Wagner, Director of the program for the last 4 years. “Whether you were discovering insects in the Weird Science class or channeling your creativity in the Young Writer’s Workshop, we want to hear from you.” Wagner added. Testimonials taken from past graduates of the academy will be used to promote this year’s upcoming program.

When the program started, the goal was to get younger students excited about learning in a fun, friendly learning environment.

“By coming to the university at a younger age students would be familiar with the campus setting increasing their chances of continuing their education and earning a degree,” Wagner said.

The Ohio University Southern Academy of Excellence program welcomes past participants and invites them to get involved with this year’s upcoming class slated for July 26 to Aug. 6.

This year, classes will be offered in Ironton and Proctorville due to the increasing number of students from the eastern part of the county and in West Virginia. The staff is looking forward to sharing an exciting summer experience with school children in the Tri-State.

“There are many volunteer opportunities available to help with making this year’s class a success. We would love to have you visit or teach one of the classes,” added Wagner.

All past participants are invited to attend the last day of the program on Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. to be introduced to the young graduates.
