Lady Pointers down Raiders
BIDWELL — The South Point Lady Pointers could set their watches by their clutch hitting.
South Point came up with the clutch hits at exactly the right time as they beat the River Valley Lady Raiders 10-4 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“I’m very excited for how well we played and especially our timely hits,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Tara Layne. “We got our runners in scoring position and so many players stepped up and drove in the runs.”
River Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a hit by Alison Porter and an error.
South Point answered with a four-run second inning and never looked back.
Ashley Goodall walks, stole second base and scored on a doubly by Ashley Smith. Brianna Whlaey and Amy Lien singled for a run and an error scored another run.
Emilee Button had a two-out double to make it 4-1.
The Lady Pointers added two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take an insurmountable 10-2 lead.
Rachel Murnahan scattered eight hits, struck out seven and walked one to get the win for the Lady Pointers.
South Point had 11 hits with Button going 4-for-5 to pace the offense. Goodall was 2-3.
“Emilee Button really stepped up for us. Emilee is the type of positive player that every coach wishes they had a whole team full of the positive attitude that she has,” said Layne.
“Murnahan did a great job working her spots today and letting the defense back her up.”
South Point (3-2, 1-0) visits Chesapeake Wednesday in a league game.
