CHESAPEAKE — The pitching was good the entire game. The defense was good save one inning.

Defenses broke down in the late innings and helped decide the outcome as the Chesapeake Lady Panthers beat the South Point Lady Pointers 3-1 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We both played an error-free game and then you had one inning where the defense let both teams down,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice. “But defense is a big part of the game.”

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sidney Boyle reached on a two-out error and Courtney Heffner followed with a run-scoring double.

Myky Harmon was safe on an error to put runners on the corners. Harmon stole second base and Caitlyn Heffner singled for two runs.

South Point got its only run in the seventh inning when Ashley Miller doubled with two outs and scored on two Chesapeake errors.

After a walk loaded the bases, Allison Chapman struck out the next batter to end the game.

Chapman allowed just two hits, struck out eight and walked two. South Point’s Rachel Murnahan gave up five hits, fanned four and walked two. None of the runs in the game were earned.

“As the game went on, Chapman threw better,” said Rice.

Chesapeake (5-2, 2-0) plays Wellston at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Rio Grande. South Point fell to 3-3and 1-1.
