COAL GROVE — Who said the industrial era is over?
The Coal Grove Hornets used four stolen bases to help make three runs as they blanked the South Point Pointers 3-0 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We’ve got some pretty good team speed and we try to utilize it. When you’re in a tight game, sometimes you have to manufacture some runs,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.
Coal Grove (2-4, 2-1) created two runs in the fourth inning with three stolen bases.
Oakie Haynes singled and stole second and third, then scored when Evan Ferguson grounded out.
Cody Good followed with a base hit and stole second base where he scored on a hit by Drew Jenkins.
The Hornets added a run in the fifth inning when Wayne Sparks singled, stole second and rode home on a hit by Frank Delawder.
Sparks pitched his second straight shutout to get the win. He struck out 11, walked just one and allowed only four hits in going the distance.
South Point’s Tyler Jenkins took the loss in relief. Robert Woodard went 2-3.
