PROCTORVILLE — Matt Campbell took matters into his own hands. His hitting hands.
Campbell had three hits and four runs batted in to lead the Fairland Dragons past the Portsmouth Clay Panthers 7-1 Monday.
“He’s hitting the ball the way we expected,” Fairland coach Bryan Ward said of Campbell. “He’s been more selective with his pitches. He’s a big, strong kid.”
Campbell and Brandon Begil belted home runs to trigger the Dragons’ 9-hit attack. Campbell was 3-4, Jon Baise 2-3 and Alex Thackston 2-4.
Clay (7-8) got a run in the top of the first inning but the Dragons came right back with three in the bottom of the frame.
Baise reached on an error, stole second base and scored on a double by Thackston. Chad Fisher walked and Campbell had an RBI single.
Terry Duty and Begil walked and Eric Riley hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored.
Campbell and Begil slammed solo home runs in the third inning as the lead went to 5-1.
In the fourth, Base singled, stole second and moved to third on a fly ball to the outfield. Fisher walked and stole second and Campbell followed with a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Baise — the second of four pitchers — got the win for the Dragons (8-3) who visit Coal Grove on Wednesday.
