FRANKLIN FURANCE — Some hard shots at the plate gave the South Point Lady Pointers a shot in the arm.

Key extra base hits by Courtney Koukos and Katelynn Leonard along with the 5-hit pitching of Rachel Murnahan helped South Point get past the Green Lady Bobcats 7-2 Tuesday.

“It was a good, solid win tonight from all areas of the game. We really needed this win. I think it has given our girls some confidence going into the second round of the OVC play,” said South Point coach Tara Layne.

Koukos was 2-4 with a double and a triple to back the pitching of Murnahan who gave struck out seven and walked just one.

After a scoreless first inning, Green took a 1-0 lead in the second on a walk to Breanna Johnson and a hit by Cassie King that took a bad hop in the outfield and turned into a double.

South Point (6-6) tied the game in the third inning.

Murnahan walked and courtesy runner Allison Mitchell stole second base and went to third on a passed ball. Brianna Whaley reached first base on a missed third strike allowing Mitchell to score.

South Point went up 2-1 in the fourth when Koukos tripled and Tanner Miller grounded out.

Green came back to tie the game again in the bottom of the fifth on a singled by Ashley Spears and an error.

The Lady Pointers took the lead for good with a run in the sixth.

Emilee Button walked, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice by Leonard. Button scored when Koukos grounded out.

South Point put four insurance runs on the scoreboard in the seventh inning.

Whaley walked, stole second and scored on Amy Lien’s double. Leonard and Koukos had back-to-back doubles for two more runs and Koukos scored on a passed ball.

“Our team never gives up,” said Layne. “So many times this year teams have scored on us and we answer back the very next inning. I think our girls thrive on the challenge. They don’t give up and it’s been the difference in quite a few games already this year.”
