The past week was like cramming for college finals. A lot was packed into a short time span.

The St. Joseph Flyers swept a doubleheader from the Sciotoville East Tartans Saturday to cap a week that saw them play eight games in seven days.

“It was hard but we got through the week and our pitching survived, so we’re happy this week is over and we came out of it 6-1,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

T.J. Young and Justin Mahlmeister provided the battery for the twinbill. Young pitched the first game and beat East 11-8 while Mahlmeister caught. Mahlmeister won the nightcap 4-1 as Young caught.

Young gave up just five hits and struck out three, but he walked seven to help East score its runs. Mahlmeister struck out five, walked one and gave up only three hits and the run was unearned.

“T.J. was okay he just didn’t have his good control today,” Bryant said. “Mahlmeister was getting ahead in the count and throwing a lot strikes.”

In the first game, the Flyers broke out with six runs to start the game.

Payton Blair reached on a passed ball third strike, stole second base, moved to third when Anthony Whaley put down a sacrifice bunt and scored on Tanner Riley’s double.

Riley moved up on a wild pitch, Joseph Unger walked and a wild pitch scored Riley.

Mahlmeister doubled in a run, Young reached on passed ball third strike, Cody Blackburn singled in a pair of runs and Spencer Schwab grounded out as a run scored.

East got four runs in the bottom of the inning and each team scored in the second.

The Flyers got their run in the second when Whaley reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a errant throw and came home on Riley’s base hit.

The lead went to 10-5 in the third.

Schwab walked, Levi Hopkins singled and Blair had a 2-run single. Blair stole second and third and scored on a wild pickoff throw to third.

St. Joseph added a run in the fourth when Young singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Schwab’s ground out.

In the second game, the Flyers went up 1-0 in the first inning when Blair singled, stole second and third bases, and scored on Levi Hopkins’ base hit.

East tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning but the Flyers took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning.

Young walked, courtesy runner Wain Artis was balked to second and Unger reached on an error. After Unger stole second, a balk scored Artis and Unger went to third where he scored on a wild pitch.

The Flyers added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Blair singled, stole second, moved to third on Hopkins’ sacrifice bunt and came home on a hit by Riley.

St. Joseph (10-1) visits Harvest Christian Monday and Minford Tuesday.
