Investigators have ruled the cause of a fire that destroyed a house in the south end of Ironton early Sunday morning is undetermined.

The Ironton Fire Department responded to 3026 S. 11th St. at 4:09 a.m. after staff at nearby Jo-Lin Nursing Home reported seeing the blaze.

“The fire was fairly confined to the living room and had extended to windows and the roof,” Ironton Fire Chief Tom Runyon said. “There was heat damage and smoke.”

The single-story frame structure was owned by John Hackworth and rented by his son, Samuel Hackworth.

No one was home at the time and there were no injuries.

“Investigators did not find any evidence of criminal intent,” according to Shane Cartmill, public information office with the State Fire Marshal. “The exact cause of the fire, which originated in the living room of the home, could not be pinpointed.”

Firefighters were at the scene for about two and a half hours.
