PROCTORVILLE — No one expected the Fairland Dragons to be the favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference baseball race before the season.

Except maybe for the Dragons.

Fairland completed an improbable Ohio Valley Conference run as the Dragons beat the South Point Pointers 8-1 Friday to clinch at least a share of the league title.

“The kids have overachieved. They were willing to put in the work and it paid off,” said Fairland first-year coach Bryan Ward.

The Dragons are 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the OVC. They have two league games remaining, both against River Valley with one on Monday.

Chad Fisher went six innings to get the win and also went 2-2 at the plate with a home run and three runs batted in. Eric Riley was 3-3 with two RBIs.

Tyler Jenkins, Tyler Gregory and Cody Taylor each had two hits for the Pointers.

Fairland took a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Jon Baise and Alex Thackston singled and Fisher walked to load the bases. Matt Campbell reached on an error as two runs scored and Riley followed with a two-run single.

The Pointers got their run in the top of the second on hits by Gregory and Taylor, a ground out and Blake Meadows’ sacrifice fly.

The Dragons got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Baise walked, stole second and Fisher had an RBI single.

Baise finished with three stolen bases.

“Baise is a good leadoff man. He puts the bat on the ball and he can run,” said Ward.

Fairland got a run in the third when Riley singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a balk.

Baise walked and Fisher hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to cap the scoring.

Fairland plays at River Valley Monday.
