National Goodwill Week celebrated

CHESAPEAKE — National Goodwill Week began Sunday. The event will be celebrated locally with an open house at 10 a.m. Friday at the Chesapeake location of Goodwill Industries, 404 Third Ave.

Mayor Dick Gilpin will join the festivities at 11 a.m. and issue a proclamation in support of Goodwill Industries.

Goodwill is a non-profit organization that provides training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities and other disadvantages.

‘Macker Mania’ set for Wednesday

IRONTON — The Ironton Gus Macker Basketball Tournament kick-off “Macker Mania” event is set for Wednesday.

Sponsored by Ironton Buffalo Wild Wings and Friends of Ironton, the celebration will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. BWWs will offer 99 cents kids meals for the event.

Activities include:

Personal appearance by Scott McNeal, aka Gus Macker along with the Macker Man mascot

Door prize drawings every 15 minutes (lots of good prizes!), including a free team entry for the Ironton Gus Macker tournament.

Foul shooting contests with prizes.

WTCR will have a live radio remote on site.

Players can pick up their team registration applications.

OSU set to host strawberry workshop

PIKETON — Ohio State University South Centers at Piketon will offer a strawberry production workshop May 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The workshop is to provide the latest in production management techniques. Registration is $5 per person.

Ohio State University Extension educator Brad Bergefurd will compare various production methods such as high tunnel, plasticulture and matted row, and how these methods can help to extend the growing season. Attendees will also learn disease and insect management practices, drip irrigation solutions, and the importance of pollination.

The workshop is designed not only for the backyard fruit grower, but also the commercial grower. Last year, Ohio producers harvested 710 acres of strawberries, valued at $5.7 million, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

SP church offers money management seminar May 12-13

SOUTH POINT — The South Point Church of Christ will present a money management seminar Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13.

The seminar, called “No debt, no sweat” will be at 7 p.m. nightly and are free and open to the public. It is taught by Steve Diggs, a Nashville, Tenn., minister, financial counselor and author. It is meant to show people how to show people how to develop a spending plan that really works, six secrets of great investors, how mutual funds work, and how to plan for a dignified retirement. According to information from the church, attendees will learn how to buy cars without making payments to the bank.

Childcare will be provided to those who attend the seminar.

Bluegrass show slated for May 10

ASHLAND, Ky. —America’s Bluegrass Gospel Show will be 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, at The Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Ky.

This year’s lineup will feature two-time reigning IBMA Entertainers of the Year, Daily and Vincent. Also featured will be the three-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year Dale Ann Bradley, and Grammy Award Winner, Larry Sparks. Also appearing on the show will be The America’s Bluegrass Band with Larry Cordle, Don Rigsby, and Tim Surrett, IBMA Hall of Fame Member Melvin Goins, Tommy Webb, Joe Freeman, Dana Romanello and Julie Reeves.
