Heartland of Riverview hosting arthritis event

SOUTH POINT — May is National Arthritis Month and Heartland of Riverview is celebrating by hosting two special guest speakers from the Scott Orthopedic Group, raising awareness and educating the public.

Heartland of Riverview will be having a Dessert & More with Dr. Stanley S. Tao discussing “Knee Injuries in Young Athletes on today at 6 p.m. and welcomes all athletes, coaches and parents to attend.

Dr. Vivek Neginhal will be presenting “Understanding the Latest Advances in Hip and Knee Replacements”, on May 13 at 6 p.m. Both events are open to the public and for more information please contact the facility at 740-894-3287.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, more than forty-three million Americans, or one in six people, have some kind of arthritis.

Arthritis is a general term used to describe more than 100 chronic diseases of the joints, bones and muscles such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus and even osteoporosis.

There is no cure for most types of arthritis; however, awareness and education are keys to continuing the fight.

“Our staff hopes to utilize the month of May to further educate the community about the risk factors, symptoms and treatments for various types of arthritis,” Catherine Coburn, Director of Marketing and Admissions said. “Many forms of arthritis can be successfully managed through medication, exercise and changes in mental outlook.”

Bellefonte Animal Clinic receives AAHA accreditation

RUSSELL, Ky. — Bellefonte Animal Clinic of Russell has again received accreditation following a comprehensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association.

The evaluation includes a quality assessment review of the hospital’s facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management.

Only 15 percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association.

In order to maintain accredited status, Bellefonte Animal Clinic must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association’s consultants.

Second Saturday screening of ‘Old Dogs’ is May 8

SUMMIT, Ky. — “Old Dogs” is the feature at the Second Saturday Screening at the Summit Branch of Boyd County Public Library on May 8.

The movie will be shown at 2 p.m. at the branch, located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School. Admission is free, and refreshments are served.

“Old Dogs,” rated PG, stars John Travolta and Robin Williams as two friends and business partners who find their lives turned upside down when strange circumstances lead them to taking care of 7-year-old twins.

A free kids/family movie is shown on the second Saturday of each month at Summit. Also, a teen/tween movie is shown on the third Wednesday, at 4 p.m., at Summit. The May 19 feature is “Bandslam.”

Learn Assisi embroidery May 10

SUMMIT, Ky. — Members of the Tri-Area Needle Arts group will teach the art of Assisi embroidery at a May 10 program at the Summit branch of Boyd County Public Library.

The Monday night program, which starts at 6 p.m., is part of the weekly Piece-ing it Together craft club. Once a month, the group makes a special take-home craft, and the library supplies the materials.

Assisi embroidery is a form of counted-thread embroidery based on an ancient Italian tradition where the background is filled with embroidery stitches and the main motifs are left unstitched. The name is derived from the Italian town of Assisi, where the modern form of the craft originated.

The Summit branch is located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School. New members are always welcome at the craft club meetings.

In June, the take-home craft will be Mosaic flag plaques.

KDMC offering pregnancy class beginning May 11

ASHLAND, Ky. — The King’s Daughters Maternal Child Health Department offers free Pregnancy 101 classes to help expectant parents prepare for their new arrival.

The next class begins Tuesday, May 11, 6:30 to 9 p.m., in the KDMC Health Education Center (lower level of the Lexington Avenue parking garage), and will continue at the same time and place each Tuesday through June 1.

Participants should be between 20 and 34 weeks gestation.

The class is limited to 20 couples, and participants should bring two pillows. Registration is required and can be made by calling (606) 408-7366.

The classes cover a range of topics including anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, stages of labor, relaxation and breathing techniques, anesthesia/pain management, C-section, recovery, breastfeeding and infant care.
