CROWN CITY — Defense was the difference.

The Rock Hill Redwomen got solid pitching from Morgan Schug and flawless defense to beat the South Gallia Lady Rebels 4-2 Wednesday.

Schug pitched a five-hitter to go with seven strikeouts and only one walk. The defense did not make an error.

“Defensively, we’re sound. Our pitchers throw strikes and we make the plays behind them and that’s been the key for us,” said Redwomen coach Mary Harper.

The game was scoreless until Rock Hill pushed across a run in the fifth.

Chelsea Harper walked, Schug singled, and BreeAnna Depriest walked to load the bases. Megan Russell walked to force in the run.

Rock Hill got some breathing room with three runs in the sixth inning.

Courtney Duncan singled and scored on Depriest’s triple. Harper was safe on an error as a run scored and Morgan Damron capped the rally with an RBI double.

South Gallia got two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a hit batsman, a single, a ground out and a two-run single.

But Schug struck out the next batter to end the game.

Rock Hill (15-10) hosts Ironton at 7 p.m. Friday.

CORRECTION: Rock Hill finished 6-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference and clinched at least third place in the final standings, not second.

South Point has just three losses with one game to play against Coal Grove. A win would clinch second place for the Lady Pointers.
