The trial took one day; the jury deliberation less than 20 minutes. Now an Ironton man found guilty of driving drunk and then threatening the officer who arrested him knows he will spend four years in prison for what he did.

Donald Lewis, 58, of 615 S. 10th St., Ironton, was sentenced Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court. He stood trial April 29 before Judge D. Scott Bowling.

Lewis was arrested Feb. 22 after an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper spotted him driving 68 miles an hour in a 55-mile-an-hour zone on U.S. 52 near its intersection of State Route 650.

At the time of his arrest — 9:30 a.m .— a urine test showed his alcohol level to be .353, more than three times the legal limit. Authorities said Lewis became belligerent when told he was going to jail.

“He threatened to kill the officer, his wife and kids,” Assistant Lawrence County Prosecutor Brigham Anderson said.

During the trial, Lewis maintained his innocence in spite of being videotaped during the traffic stop and arrest.

“They had him on dash-cam,” Anderson said.

The February arrest was Lewis’ fourth DUI offense in six years.

Also Wednesday, Johnny L. Miller Jr., 27, of 64 Private Drive 423, Pedro, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Anderson said Miller pleaded guilty to other burglary charges late last year and was released on a short furlough before being sent to prison. While he was on that furlough, he committed two more burglaries.

“I feel this is one of the worst forms of the offense given the facts (previous burglaries) I just stated,” Anderson told Bowling.

Miller will serve that latest five-year prison term consecutively to the six years he received for the previous burglary convictions.
