Wednesday, May 5, the Daughters of the American Revolution invited the top female seniors of each of the eight high schools of Lawrence County to a luncheon.

Roberta Cook, director of the Southeast District, spoke on the purpose of the DAR and why the luncheon was given.

The next special program at the museum will be an antique appraisal fair on May 29. There will be three appraisers overseeing three specialties.

Recently, we have lost another special person in our historical society. Vera Billings was president and a leader for several years.

She was well-known for the Ohio State Nurses Association, was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and several groups. She will be remembered and thanked for her dedication to the historical society.

Recently, we came upon a listing of a California Rock (Union Twp.) landmark in the Ohio River in Coryville. If you have heard of this and have information on it, please let us know.

Historical fact: Six of John Rankin’s sons and one grandson fought in the Civil War, all survived. They had 13 children.

John’s wife, Jean, died in 1878 and John Rankin died in 1886 at the age of 93 and is buried at Ripley’s Maplewood Cemetery.
